The challenge

How do you take multiple aging University buildings and repurpose into one cohesive home - with everything on show?

MECD

Workplace Analysis | Interior Design | Communications

Manchester Engineering Campus Development (MECD) is a new build project for the University of Manchester that has provided a new home for 8,000 staff and students. iDEA were part of the fabric of the project, from briefing through to completion.

We compiled the initial brief and vision for this ambitious project, challenging many long held practices and beliefs whilst maintaining the support of staff and students. We delivered a 40% reduction in area from the ‘lift and shift’ requirement and our role continued through to overseeing the appointment and handover to the Design Team.

Communications

It was vital we got the thoughts and opinions of both staff and students in order to build up a picture of space-use. We launched an interactive survey on our Signal platform to ensure everyone had a voice - but it was vital that we promoted it on campus in a striking way. We used 360 photography as the basis of our campaign - creating a visual talking point to raise awareness of the survey.

We established a communication portal (Convene) to play back our workshop outputs and survey data, as well as to encourage participation from staff and students to upload their own thoughts on the project.
