The challenge

How do you sympathetically modernise a Grade II listed London landmark?

Old Admiralty Building

Workplace Analysis | Interior Design | Communications

This project was with iDEA for over eight years - a building that became part of our lives as well as us being part of the buildings ongoing story. A building that had hosted history and over generations accrued a patina of events. Eventually the glory faded and memories became distant.

Accretions of countless re-fits diminished it’s purpose until 2013 when an ambitious plan of restoration emerged.

This project enabled a vast team of experts in their field to sensitively relaunch Old Admiralty Building as the flagship GPA Hub building of Whitehall and we were lucky enough to be front and centre of its design.

See the story

We have successfully delivered a subtle spatial evolution that respects the heritage but secures the buildings long term future as a thriving, modern, technology enabled space that supports the GPA’s long term property strategy. A former rabbit warren of disconnected spaces have become interwoven connected open spaces and key architectural features celebrated as unique spaces for people to collaborate, meet and socialise.

OAB represents the transformation of a treasured heritage asset in to thriving hub and a beautiful place to work.

Behind the scenes

Signage

In order to navigate this impressive interior we developed a signage and way-finding strategy which added an unobtrusive and sophisticated information layer to the interior design.

" I feel privileged to work in such a beautiful building in the middle of London. On my way home, I'm often looking to see if there's anything exciting happening near Buckingham Palace. OAB is not just an office, it is the place to be. "
