The challenge
How do you change the perception of what an academic space should feel like?
University of East London
Interior Design | Staff Communications
Following the pandemic, the Professional Services staff wanted more variety in their workspace to support their new working styles. Our brief was to create a pilot space for staff to trial different work settings depending on the activity they were undertaking.
We worked closely with the Projects & Estates Development team and the end users to understand the needs and demands of future occupants. We transformed an unloved area into an inclusive, dynamic space with multiple working purposes: collaborative spaces, quiet zones, individual pods for Teams calls and a social environment for reconnecting with colleagues.
Oasis Lounge
Our brief was to create a student social lounge and self-serve coffee bar, with a focus on well-being and to showcase the grade II building.
Research into the heritage of the space indicated its use as a library. With an original bookcase and reading room features, the room now provides a multi-purpose space for students to socialise and chat in high back arm chairs, work at study tables and grab a drink surrounded by lots of planting to create a relaxed ‘oasis' feel adjacent to a courtyard.
Entrance Pavillions
The removal of entrance barriers at their Stratford Campus enabled us to develop a brief with UEL to reimagine their campus entrance as a dynamic street, with a series of circular ‘Pavilions’ which help orientate and connect students to the rest of the campus and reinforce values of sustainability and well-being through material selections and biophillia.
The solution provides destinations for socialising and learning with dedicated areas for Careers Zone, a Residential Life Information hub, a refreshment zone, a bookable events room along with a wellbeing room and study and meet spaces.
Student Forum
This project transforms a dated restaurant and underutilised work area into a vibrant facility which improves the student experience with more areas to hang out and socialise. Stakeholders have included Students’ Union, disability groups and the campus catering teams to create a new vibrant centre for UEL’s Stratford Student Village.
The scheme combines spaces into an open, inclusive destination which includes multi-purpose events rooms for societies and student- led activities, a chill zone and a ‘market place’ style restaurant.
East Building Street
As a key anchor for the Docklands Campus, the atrium space has been repurposed as a ’Street’ which more intuitively connects the main campus with the Sports Dock facility.
Behind the scenes
" My favourite thing is the ability to meet new people and interact within the space... I absolutely love the new space and seeing how it develops and grows with us as a directorate "
